Best Time to Visit Kayaköy & Fethiye: Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to visit Kayaköy is from mid-September to the end of October. The sea is still warm, the ruins can be walked in the middle of the day, the Ölüdeniz crowds have thinned, and the light falls on the stone houses at its softest. The second-best time is May, when the hills are covered in wildflowers and the weather is made for walking. July and August are the warmest months for the sea and the hardest for the village: you live the day early and late. April and November are unexpectedly good if your villa has a heated pool and underfloor heating, and merely cool if it does not. Below, every month is described by temperature, sea, crowds and light; the figures in the table are rounded long-term averages for Fethiye from the Turkish State Meteorological Service.

In this guide

Kayaköy and Fethiye month by month

Month Daytime high (avg.) Sea (avg.) Crowds Light and atmosphere Best for
April ≈ 21 °C ≈ 17 °C Very few Green hills, wildflowers, occasional showers Walkers, photographers, heated-pool stays
May ≈ 26 °C ≈ 20 °C Few Long days, clear air, the sea for the brave Lycian Way, boat days, a quiet spring week
June ≈ 31 °C ≈ 24 °C Moderate Summer begins; warm, long evenings Sea and village in balance; honeymoons
July ≈ 34 °C ≈ 26 °C High Hot and dry, cicadas, late sunsets Beach-first holidays, pool days
August ≈ 34 °C ≈ 28 °C Highest The hottest, busiest month of the year Early-morning, late-evening people
September ≈ 31 °C ≈ 26 °C Moderate → few Softer light, cooler evenings, crowds leave Couples; walking and swimming in one day
October ≈ 26 °C ≈ 23 °C Few The most balanced month; long golden hours Autumn breaks, honeymoons, slow travel
November ≈ 20 °C ≈ 20 °C Very few Olive harvest, first rains, a silent village Heated pool and fireside, reading, walking

The figures are approximate; check the Turkish State Meteorological Service for a live forecast. Because Kayaköy sits a few kilometres inland on a plain, it runs a degree or two warmer than Ölüdeniz by day and several degrees cooler at night — a difference that works in the village’s favour on summer evenings. For travellers from the UK, direct flights to Dalaman run well into the autumn, and the October half-term falls squarely in the best fortnight of the year.

Spring: April–May

April is Kayaköy’s greenest month. The paths between the abandoned houses fill with poppies and daisies, and the pine forest smells of rain. Daytime temperatures sit just above 20 °C — light-jacket weather — with showers that usually pass within a few hours. The sea is still cold. The ruins are almost empty; from the upper church you can look down on the whole village without meeting anyone. With a heated pool, April becomes a different month altogether: a morning walk, a warm pool in the afternoon, a fire in the evening.

May is the best month of the year for walking and for boat days. The air is clear, the days are long, and the Kayaköy–Ölüdeniz section of the Lycian Way is shaded and cool. The sea approaches 20 °C and is comfortable in the midday sun. Outside the Turkish bank-holiday weeks the village is quiet and the restaurants have just opened with new menus. For couples who want no crowds but will not give up the sea, May and October are the two right answers.

Summer: June–August

June is when the sea warms and the evenings stretch out. Daytime highs pass 30 °C, but the humidity is low and the shade is comfortable. Ölüdeniz has not yet reached full summer density, and an early-morning swim is still possible. June is a popular honeymoon month: the sea is warm and the village has not yet filled.

July and August are the best months for the sea and the hardest for seeing the village by day. Highs reach 34 °C and there is no shade in the ruins at noon. The right rhythm is clear: ruins or beach between seven and ten in the morning, pool and pine shade through the middle of the day, sea or boat again in the late afternoon, dinner in a stone courtyard at night. Cicadas, late sunsets and starry nights are the reward of these months; the crowds and prices of Ölüdeniz are the cost. Kayaköy is a markedly calmer base than Ölüdeniz in these weeks, and coming back to the village after the heat of the day rescues the evening. Our guide to the beaches near Kayaköy explains which bay to choose at which hour to avoid the summer crowds.

Autumn: September–November

September offers everything summer offers, without the crowds. The sea keeps its August warmth, days are around 30 °C and the evenings begin to cool. Once the schools go back, Ölüdeniz empties, boat trips calm down and restaurant tables become easy to find. From mid-September the light changes: the afternoon sun sits lower, the stone walls turn gold, and the best period of the year for sunset photographs begins.

October is, for us, the best month of the year, and we say so with numbers rather than adjectives: sea temperatures are around 24 °C at the start of the month and 22 °C at the end; days are 25–27 °C and evenings need a jacket. The ruins can be walked all day, the Lycian Way is possible even at noon, and the boats still run to Gemiler and Butterfly Valley. In the village the bitter-orange trees come into fruit and the first olives are picked. These six weeks from mid-September to the end of October are Kayaköy at its peak for couples and slow travellers; we look at this period separately in our guide to the best months for a honeymoon.

November rewards the right expectations. The sea is around 20 °C and swimmable on sunny middays; days are around 20 °C, nights are cool, and the rain arrives in the second half of the month. The village is at its quietest: the olive harvest, smoke from chimneys, empty paths. Some restaurants close or shorten their hours; those that stay open return to the village’s own rhythm. In November, Kayaköy is an escape with a heated pool and underfloor heating, and simply a cool village without them. That distinction decides where to stay out of season.

Winter: December–March

In winter, daytime temperatures hover around 15 °C; sunny days are warm enough for a terrace at noon, and the nights are cold and sometimes wet. The ruins keep winter hours (08:30–17:30) and are almost entirely empty; walking them after rain, with the smell of wet stone, is an experience summer cannot offer. Bitter oranges and mandarins hang in the gardens, and village breakfast continues in courtyards warmed by wood stoves. Winter is for guests who want to see Kayaköy as the locals do, who are not counting on the sea, and who regard a well-heated stone house and a book as a holiday. Kassandra Heritage’s season runs from April to November; please ask separately about availability in winter.

Best months by activity

  • Walking the ruins: all day in April–May and October–November; in summer, 08:30–10:30 or after 17:00.
  • The Kayaköy to Ölüdeniz walk on the Lycian Way: October to May. In July and August, only at sunrise and with plenty of water.
  • Swimming: June to October; the warmest water in August and September, the best sea-and-air balance in early October.
  • Boat days (Gemiler, Butterfly Valley, Kabak): May to October; the calmest days in late September and October.
  • Watching or flying paragliders from Babadağ: flights run for most of the year when the weather allows; visibility is usually clearest in September and October.
  • Sunset photography: mid-September to November, as the sun drops lower and the stone turns warm.
  • Silence: November, April and the second half of October.
  • Honeymoons: early June, September and October.

Seasons at Kassandra Heritage

Matching your accommodation to the season matters even more than choosing the date. All seven stone villas at Kassandra Heritage have underfloor heating, and the pools at Calla, Adonis and Daphne are heated — which means a warm pool and a warm house in April and November; the other four villas are at their best from May to October. In summer the thick stone walls and the pine shade keep the midday heat outside; breakfast is served at the villa on request, and our restaurant KÁRMI is open from 13:00 to 22:00 for dinner. Our season is April to November, and as the village empties in autumn the villas fill, so September and October dates are worth planning early. Our guides to villas with heated pools and a three-day autumn itinerary were written for exactly this period.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Kayaköy?

October. The sea is 22–24 °C, days are 25–27 °C, the crowds are few and the light is soft; the ruins and the Lycian Way can be walked at any hour. The six weeks from mid-September to the end of October are Kayaköy’s most balanced period. May, with its wildflowers and ideal walking weather, comes second.

Can you swim in Fethiye in October?

Yes. Sea temperatures in Fethiye and Ölüdeniz are around 24 °C at the start of October and around 22 °C at the end, and midday swims are comfortable on sunny days. October is the one month when the sea is warm, the air is cool and the beaches are calm; the boats run all month.

Is Kayaköy worth visiting in winter?

Yes, with the right expectations. The ruins are open 08:30–17:30 in winter and almost empty; days are around 15 °C and sunny middays are mild. You come for silence, walking and village life, not for the sea. Underfloor heating and a heated pool decide winter comfort, and some restaurants are closed or keep shorter hours.

What is Fethiye like in November?

The first half of November is usually sunny and around 20 °C, with the sea still swimmable at about 20 °C. Rain and cool nights arrive in the second half. The village is at its quietest and the olive harvest is under way. With a heated pool and a fire, a stone villa in November offers some of the most peaceful weeks of the year.

Is Kayaköy too hot in summer?

In July and August daytime highs reach 34 °C and there is no shade in the ruins at midday. The answer is rhythm: walk the ruins between 08:30 and 10:30 or after 17:00, and spend the middle of the day in the pool or the pine shade. Evenings in the village are a few degrees cooler than in Ölüdeniz.

Is Fethiye crowded in September?

The first half of September is still busy; once the schools go back, Ölüdeniz empties noticeably from the middle of the month. The sea keeps its August warmth and restaurant tables become easy to find. Mid-September to late October is the right period for anyone who wants summer without the crowds, and it includes the UK October half-term.

Are there heated-pool stays in winter?

Heated pools are rare in Kayaköy. At Kassandra Heritage the pools at Calla, Adonis and Daphne are heated and every villa has underfloor heating; the season runs from April to November, and winter availability is by request. For any out-of-season booking, confirm that pool heating is included.

Conclusion

Every month in Kayaköy is a different village: green in April, walking in May, sea and shade in summer, balance in October, silence in November. If your dates are flexible, choose mid-September to late October; if they are not, come in any month and set the day’s rhythm to the village.

Summer in Kayaköy lasts until November. For September and October dates, compare the heated-pool villas Calla, Adonis and Daphne on Our Villas and check availability on the reservation page.
